Dead sperm whale lifted out of harbour

6th May 2003

The Scotsman

THE carcass of a sperm whale has been removed after it was washed up at a Scottish harbour at the weekend.

Grampian Police said the 45ft-long adult male, which was washed up at Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire at noon on Sunday, had been dead for some time.

The animal, weighing more than 60 tons, was lifted out of the bay by crane before being taken to a landfill site. The decomposing body is under guard until it can be confirmed that it is not posing a risk to public health.

The recovery operation was mounted after the Scottish Executive’s environment and rural affairs department instructed Aberdeenshire Council to remove the whale.
