FISH farmers keen to diversify into cod farming will be able to buy cod smolts from Shetland's first marine hatchery from the summer of next year. With construction and refurbishing work for the £1 million Nufish Ltd venture under way, the company hopes to be up and running by the end of this year. The plan initially is to produce 200,000 smolts a year at the Broonies Taing location, near Sandwick. According to Dennis Blackmore, one of the directors of Nufish, the company wants to grow business "organically" in line with the growth of the cod farming sector. "By summer 2003 fish farmers should be in a position to get fish from us," Mr Blackmore said. The new company hopes to be able to create 12 new jobs. Nufish has been able to attract grant funding from Europe through the FIFG scheme (£300,000) and from Shetland Enterprise (£247,000), and received a loan of almost £300,000 from the Shetland Development Trust.
