NORWAY

It is widely reported that the merger of three Norwegian fish producers will result in the creation of the world’s second largest salmon farming operation.

It is further reported that 40% of the new company - name as yet unknown - will be held by Fjord Seafood, the balance and controlling 60% interest in the new company will be held by Cermaq.

Cermaq is 80% state owned by the Norwegian Government.

The world’s largest producer of farmed fish is the Dutch firm, Nutreco. The giant Dutch food company owns many of Scotland's fish farms. In August 2002, Friends of the Earth filed complaints against Nutreco, charging that its Chilean salmon farms were violating Chilean Law by causing environmental pollution.
