Large quantities of mackerel dumped in North Sea

October 2002

Norwegian news bureau NTB reports that large quantities of dead mackerel have been discovered during an inspection of the pipeline between the Oseberg and Brage platforms in the North Sea.

Fisheries Director Peter Gullestad stated that the mackerel had been dumped and that it amounted to a serious environmental felony.

The Directorate of Fisheries will be analysing several hours of video recordings and with the help of satellite tracing they will be able to determine which vessels were in the area.

Vessels discard mackerel catches for several reasons.
One reason is that the largest mackerel fetch best prices. Therefore, catches of much smaller fish are dumped.
