Watson has been arrested on several occasions, most memorably by his own countrymen after he forced a Cuban dredger off the Grand Banks in an effort to protect dwindling fish stocks. He was tried on a number of misdemeanors none of which stuck. Since the subsequent catastrophic collapse of the Newfoundland fisheries, the Canadian Government has employed similar tactics as those originally employed by Watson.
Whatever you think about the man's tactics, he is often portrayed as a pirate, an image you suspect he rather enjoys going on the number of skull and cross bones adorning the Mowat's decks, his brand of direct action has undoubtedly checked the ongoing rape of what is, for now anyhow, Earth's greatest resource.
The Farley Mowat sets sail for Antarctica via Hobart, Australia on December 4th. Donations can be made online at: www.seashepherd.org
