UK promotes cod fish farming
Pesca2.com 11th February 2003 The need of developing marine species like cod, haddock and halibut encourage the United Kingdom government to develop marine fish farming.
This is an important moment for fish farming, because of the poor condition of wild stocks. It is expected that this plan will offer a valuable lifeline to the UK fish processing industry.
British Marine Finfish Association chairman Alastair Barge said that Scotland face the best opportunity of becoming a market leader in whitefish farming, and this will mean an increment of the economic opportunities for coastal communities and other areas directly related to seafood production.
UK landings by the commercial fishing fleet of the six key species - monkfish, herring, mackerel, plaice, haddock and cod - are down by almost 50 per cent since the 1970s, but consumer demand is increasing - second only to poultry in terms of protein eaten at home.
