THE future of marine mammals and how they are affected by human activity in the sea is to be discussed at a day-long seminar in Peterhead, Scotland on Friday, 28th March.
The seminar, titled Marine Mammals - Science, Management and Politics, has been organised by Aberdeenshire Council, in conjunction with the European Bureau for Conservation and Development, and is aimed at those with an interest in the fishing industry or in conservation issues.
Aberdeenshire’s Fishing Co-ordinator Ann Bell said: “There has been a great deal of concern in recent years about the current state of marine mammals such as seals, dolphins and killer whales, and one of the aims of this seminar is to assess whether there is a problem and if so, how big that problem might be.”
The gathering has attracted guest speakers from the UK, Europe and Canada.
Following a formal welcome by Councillor Raymond Bisset, chair of the North East Scotland Fisheries Development Partnership, the morning session will include presentations by Struan Stevenson MEP, president of EU Parliament Fisheries Committee; Despina Symons, director of the European Bureau for Conservation and Development; Lars Walloe, chief scientific adviser to the Norwegian government on marine mammals; Robert Simon of the Canadian Fisheries Ministry; Ian Boyd from St Andrews University, and Mona Gilstad Hials, manager of the Norwegian project “Coastal seals: from problems to resource”.
