Mexico, (El Economista/SABI via COMTEX) -- The French Minister of Foreign Trade, Mr. Francois Loos, has shown himself to be receptive to the request by Peru and Chile that the European Union end its ban on the use of fish meal for use in animal foods.
After a recent meeting between Mr. Loos and members of a delegation representing South American countries, the Peruvian Minister of Production, Mr. Eduardo Iriarte, says that the French minister showed his willingness to consider the request, given that the ban was imposed two years ago in reaction to the mad cow disease crisis.
The European Commission will review this issue in the next few months and take into account the qualification by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) of the UN of fish meal as not being a vector of transmission for the disease. Since the imposition of the ban, Peru has lost 300,000 m tons in fish meal exports, valued at US$30million.
