Oil spill closes beaches

FRENCH authorities have evacuated several beaches between Monaco and the Italian border and banned swimming in the sea after oil was swept onto the coast.
"The pollution looks heavy," a spokesman for the regional fire and rescue department, Codis, said.
Deputy prefect Abdel Aissou said the pollution had probably been caused by a ship flushing out its oil tanks at sea.
Prosecutors in Nice said the waste could have been washed from Italian waters onto French shores.
Floating barriers were being set up to contain the oil which had fouled beaches at Menton, Roquebrune-Cap Martin and Monaco.
