Endangered coral species inTasman Sea damaged by deep sea trawlers

NZCity

13th June 2004

Greenpeace claims an endangered coral species has been dragged up from the bottom of the Tasman Sea by fishing trawlers.

Last month the environmental group launched a campaign protesting against deep sea bottom trawling, and has been documenting photographic evidence of damage.

Oceans campaigner Vanessa Atkinson says there is evidence a trawler has pulled up endangered black coral, from the floor of the Tasman Sea.

She says it shows bottom trawl nets are touching the sea floor.

She says Greenpeace are waiting on a decision from the United Nations on how to protect high seas life, and hope it will place a moratorium on bottom trawl fishing.
